This enviable ranking came from U.S. Banker Magazine, the largest circulated banking trade magazine in the nation, which published their first issue for banking professionals back in 1891. U.S. Banker defines mid-size banks as those with assets between $400 million and $2.9 billion. Frontier Bank now has assets in excess of $1.8 billion.
U.S. Banker reports that the criteria for such recognition is well balanced banks with strong asset quality, ample capital, strong earnings and low overhead ratios. Banks considered for the ranking must be domestically owned, publicly traded and listed on an exchange. The magazine stated that Frontier Bank placed first "by a comfortable margin, showing strength in every category." Frontier was the only bank in the State of Washington listed among the top 100 banks.

What began in 1978 as a dream for a group of successful and dedicated business men and women, has grown to the second largest commercial bank headquartered in the state of Washington.
Frontier Bank opened for business in a temporary location at 6623 Evergreen Way in south Everett, starting with $2 million in seed capital from stock sales, and we showed a profit in our second month of operation. During our second month, deposits reached $5.3 million, surpassing all of our financial projections.
In 1979, Frontier Bank's growth - measured by deposits and profits - was noted as the most successful in state history, for a first year bank.
